Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to enough safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs. It depends on far more than how much food is produced; it also depends on whether that food can be distributed, stored, and afforded reliably, year after year. Climate change threatens each of these conditions at once, making food security one of the defining challenges of this century, and nowhere is that threat more visible than in regions where farming depends heavily on predictable rainfall.

Rising global temperatures are altering rainfall patterns in complex and often destabilizing ways. Some regions face longer, more severe droughts that shrink harvests and dry up water sources needed for irrigation and livestock. Other regions face heavier, more erratic rainfall that arrives in short, violent bursts capable of flooding fields and washing away topsoil, rather than falling steadily across a growing season as crops require. Rising temperatures alone can also reduce yields directly, since many staple crops, including maize and wheat, produce less grain when exposed to prolonged heat stress during key stages of growth.

The consequences of this instability fall unevenly across the world. Smallholder farmers, who produce a significant share of food in many developing regions and often farm rain-fed land without irrigation systems or crop insurance, are especially vulnerable to a single failed season. A drought that a large, mechanized commercial farm might absorb as a difficult year can mean genuine hunger for a family whose entire harvest depends on that one field. Understanding this uneven vulnerability is essential to understanding why climate change is not only an environmental problem, but a matter of economic justice.
