Giving Clear Directions

Learning objective: Give precise, step-by-step directions for a simple task, and recognize when directions are too unclear to follow.

Giving Clear Directions

Building on algorithms

You learned that an algorithm is step-by-step instructions. This lesson focuses on making sure those instructions are clear — easy to understand, with no confusion about what to do.

Unclear directions can be confusing

Look at the diagram above: "Make a sandwich" is unclear — it skips over important steps. Someone following this direction might not know what bread to use, what filling to add, or how to put it together.

Clear directions spell out each step

"Get bread, add filling, close it" is much clearer — each step is spelled out specifically, so someone following the directions knows exactly what to do at each step.

Testing your own directions

A good way to check if your directions are clear: imagine someone who has never done the task before trying to follow your exact words. Would they know exactly what to do at each step, or would they get confused?

Practice giving clear directions

Try giving a friend or family member step-by-step directions for a simple task, like folding a piece of paper or drawing a shape. Watch closely — do they follow your directions exactly as you meant? If not, that's a clue your directions might need to be clearer.

Unclear vs. clear directions
Unclear "Make a sandwich" Clear "Get bread, add filling, close it"

"Make a sandwich" is unclear — it skips steps. "Get bread, add filling, close it" is clear — each step is spelled out.

Vocabulary

Self-check quiz

What does it mean for directions to be clear?

Why is 'make a sandwich' an unclear direction?

How can you test whether your own directions are clear?

Practice

Write clear, step-by-step directions for a simple task (like folding a paper airplane or drawing a shape). Test them on a friend or family member.
