Learning objective: Identify the main characters in a story and describe them using details from the story.
A character is a person or animal in a story. Every story has at least one character. Look at the picture above: this story has two characters, a rabbit and a fox.
When you read a story, look for the names of who is doing things — talking, moving, thinking. Those are your characters! A story might have one character, or many characters.
You can describe a character using details from the story. Is the character happy or sad? Big or small? Brave or shy? The story usually gives you clues, through what the character says and does.
Often, one character is the main character — the character the story is mostly about. In many stories, you can tell who the main character is because that character shows up the most and does the most things in the story.
Next time you read or hear a story, try to name all the characters in it. Then pick one character and describe them using words from the story.
