Learning objective: Identify community helpers and describe the job each one does to help people in the community.
A community is a group of people who live and work in the same area — your neighborhood, town, or city is a community.
A community helper is a person whose job helps keep the community safe, healthy, or running well. Look at the diagram above: teachers, doctors, farmers, and firefighters are all community helpers, each doing a different important job.
Teachers help children learn. Doctors help people stay healthy. Farmers grow food that feeds the community. Firefighters keep people safe from fires. Every one of these jobs helps the community in its own important way.
There are many other community helpers too — police officers keep people safe, shopkeepers sell things people need, bus drivers help people travel, and many more. Every community relies on many different helpers working together.
Think about your own community. Who are some community helpers you know or have seen? What job does each one do to help?
Community helpers each do a different job that helps everyone in the community.
